DJ Diplo (aka Thomas Wesley Pentz) was born in Tupelo, Mississippi and currently calls Philadelphia home, but his musical heart is rooted in Brazil. Five years ago, a trip to Rio de Janeiro introduced him to the country’s funk carioca (“Rio funk”) phenomenon, and he’s been hooked ever since. He’s now one of the genre’s greatest champions in the States, putting his own spin on the style in his innovative remixes and production work (most famously for M.I.A.) and at his popular club performances. His albums include 2004’s Florida and this year’s Decent Work for Decent Pay, a remix compilation featuring Diplo doing his magic on tracks by Daft Punk, Bloc Party, Black Lips, CSS, M.I.A. and more.
